Capitalizing for the Reimagined Subscription Model

League of American Orchestras

On June 10, 2016, Susan Nelson of TDC spoke to attendees at the League of American Orchestras’ conference in Baltimore, MD.  In her first session, Susan was invited to share her thoughts on how orchestras might think about capitalization in light of shifting subscription and audience engagement trends.  After first reviewing the impacts a changing subscription model might have on an organization’s business model, Susan then walked through a case study, detailing the implications on revenue and expense, the balance sheet, and cash flow.

In her second session, Susan spoke with the trustees of orchestras about how organizations can both manage and take risk in light of the opportunities and challenges in the orchestral world, as well as the capitalization structures that can support those moves.
